It
has been a humbling exercise replying to those who have made use of
'Tell Bp Jonathan'. For some, writing down their experiences has
been a courageous act and I have felt privileged to hear their story,
and have tried to make as appropriate and caring a response as I can.
The emails and some letters have not been substantial - about 20
replies, and they tend to be of two kinds. Some have a genuine
story of pain and hurt to tell, and they are the ones I try to be
as sensitive as I can in replying. Others seem to be offering
answers to the question 'why have people left the church' with one or
two offering unusual but intriguing ideas. The overwhelming sense
for me is one of privilege, and I hope that whatever I say in reply
opens the door a little more for God's reconciling and healing and
forgiving and creating work to be done to the benefit of all of us.
